That first action sequence :O

...wait, you haven't watched it yet? You've seen the series/old movies right?

I've come to the conclusion that English dubbed versions of shows are just so much more satisfying to enjoy.

Reading is not on the agenda here! I'm trying to watch something!

I'm the complete opposite. I find almost every dub to be awful. Interestingly enough the show that finally switched me from dubs to subs was Initial D. Initial D first stage has the worst dub of all time.

They tried to make the dub all Fast and Furious yo! They changed the japanese names to shitty americanized ones. Takumi became Tak, Itsuki became Iggy. They dubbed over the original soundtrack with shitty rap/edm background beats. They redid some of the original visual effects...poorly. Worst. Dub. Ever.

The first few episodes are on YouTube, with subs - you have to enable them using the caption menu, but they're the proper subs - so you've no excuse! Come on, just hit the play button, and jump to 01:50 to get by the intro. You'll be hooked from the moment the music starts.

You can (not) dub Initial D. It's just...no. No.

I think I had to link to the dubbed version in the Mitsu article since Funimation has nuked all others from orbit, but yeah. Subtitles or bust!

FUNIMATION!!!! *shakes fist* Actually I can't hate on Funimation, they make a lot of their stuff available for free, which I appreciate especially since fansubs are dying.

I normally watch subs with several exceptions, Cowboy Bebop, Spice and Wolf, Evangelion, Black Lagoon, and Full Metal Alchemist.

It all really depends on who did the dubs. There are several show that I CAN NOT watched dubbed because they're done so badly in comparison for example see anything dubbed by Sentai. However there are shows like Spice and Wolf, Black Lagoon, and Cowboy Bebop that vastly prefer the English dub (Though Spice and Wolf's Russian dub is Amazing!).

I should be writing history coursework*; instead I'm convincing Brian Silvestro to watch Initial D. That's how important this is. You're a car guy who likes anime, and you haven't even tried Initial D? By God, man! That is poor humour indeed.

...

(I should actually be asleep, seeing as how it's 01:15 here. But the history coursework was a going concern a few hours ago.)

I've done everything, watched the series, watched all of the movies (minus 3.33), read the manga, read re-take, and have read several Fan Fics longer than War and Peace. Behind Spice and Wolf, Evangelion is my favorite anime series. Trust me, I was born ready! lol

I'm pretty sure they'll release it by the time 4.44 is released.

Kinja'd!!!1

Eh, I'm 50/50, it depends on what I'm watching and how good the dub is. If it's a show that relies on TONS of dialogue like Spice and Wolf I prefer the dub. If it had a lot of cultural dialogue (your -Kuns, -Chans, and -Samas an also puns that rely on similes) to progress the plot I prefer the subs.

Well, if you're going to procrastinate, you might as well find a leisure activity that makes you a better human being. Like watching Initial D. HINT.

(Having now rewatched part of the first episode, I feel I should point out that the dull high school bullshit comprises only a relatively small proportion of the series as a whole, and will be thoroughly sidelined in favour of the - already prominent - cars and racing before you're too far in.)

Whoa, if I could go back to not having seen 3.33 and watch it over again with fresh eyes, I envy you. Can't wait to hear your take on it (I liked it a lot BTW). It's especially good if you're well versed in the rest of the series (obviously with a name like yours, I shouldn't expect less).

Tsk, tsk Mr. Silvestro, If that is your name!

I think that really means you just don't watch enough subtitles. You really have to. It isn't what you say, its how you say it, right? Tone, cadence, and timing is far to easily lost, even in the best dubs. If I need a translation, I use subs whether its a French, Japanese, Spanish, or Chinese show / movie. Once you really get used to it, you don't realize you are reading subtitles and you get the original voice in your memories speaking perfect eEnglish.

I also tend to just love languages... so losing the cultural aspect of the original voices hurts me.

Of course, I could just be a weirdo, because I use subtitles in American / English movies too... With the volume at the correct levels.

This. ADV did pretty good dubs, but their reincarnations (Section 23, Sentai Filmworks, etc.) have been using honorifics in the dubs which irks the hell out of me. Meanwhile, Funimation, who did meh dubs, has since seen the quality of their dubs increase dramatically over the last few years.

Yes, I know. The original release date for the bluray was Feb 18th, but Funi "pushed it back" to give it more time in theaters. I've had the damn thing on pre-order since December, and I'm starting to loose my patience.
